Cavitt & Geni Cavitt near the North Studios on the Tower View campus on Friday, June 25 at 7 p.m. “Coming Out Together” is the story of the Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gay (PFLAG) chapter in Red Wing, Minnesota.\nChristina M Cavitt and Geni Cavitt have helped members of Red Wing PFLAG tell their story in this new book and will be present for the reading at the Anderson Center. Join us as the authors and community members who lived this history share these important stories with the audience.\nInitially founded in 1994, the Red Wing PFLAG group included members from Red Wing, Lake City, Northfield, and Prescott who came together to face down fear, ignorance, prejudice, and their own personal demons to advocate acceptance and equality for their gay and lesbian children. Initially, fearing negative reactions from the more hostile members of their community, they met in secret.\nAs one member said, “We didn’t want to create a How To Do It guidebook. Rather, we set out to tell our experiences in how we did it. We love this community — we love the people. We want to help other parents not to go through what we went through. It was only difficult because we didn’t understand the topic. Maybe this will make their way a little easier.”\nThis is a free event and all are welcome. Registration is encouraged, but not required. Attendees who register will be e-mailed event updates and be given priority for admission to the capacity-limited rain site. If the weather is severe or there is heavy rain, the Anderson Center will announce the decision to move the event to the Tower View Barn at least two hours prior to start-time via e-mail and social media.\nThe use of face coverings is required. ASL interpretation is available upon request. To request interpretation, please contact Stephanie at stephanie@andersoncenter.org ( mailto:stephanie@andersoncenter.org ) or 651-388-2009 ( tel:651-388-2009 ) at least two weeks prior to the event. Speaker’s voices will be amplified.\nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.\n\n\n
