SUMMARY:Picturing Parenthood
DESCRIPTION:Selma Fernández Richter, Andy Richter, and Jovan C. Speller are award-winning photographers and parents who capture images that reflect the joys, challenges, responsibilities, and societal pressures of raising children in the twenty-first century. This exhibition reflects the emotions and experiences of parents today, while also showcasing a range of photographic techniques and practices by contemporary artists. Picturing Parenthood runs from May 4 – July 28, 2024 in Gallery One at the Anderson Center.\nThe exhibit opens with a free artist reception on Saturday, May 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. in conjunction with the closing of the Quzhou Artist Exchange Anniversary Exhibit ( https://www.andersoncenter.org/calendarevents/quzhou-artist-exchange-anniversary-exhibit/ ) in Gallery Three. Refreshments will be provided. Featured image is by Selma Fernández Richter.\nAbout the Artists\nSelma Fernández Richter is a Mexican visual artist based in Minneapolis. Her work explores personal reflections and narratives that examine the degrees, values and intersections of living and working as an immigrant, artist, mother, and member of a bicultural family.\nShe is the recipient of several grants and awards including the McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship and two Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grants. She has exhibited at venues such as Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Nuevo Leon Center for the Arts in Monterrey, Mexico. A selection of her photographs was featured in the exhibition and book Women behind the lens: 100 years of photographic creation in Mexico, 1910-2010.\nSelma is the founder of La Luz Workshops.\n  Andy Richter is a photographer based in Minneapolis. He immerses himself in his subjects and their wider context, looking at notions of presence, place, land, and fatherhood with the heightened awareness a camera can bring.\nAndy’s work has been exhibited internationally and he has received recognition from American Photography, Photolucida, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, and the International Photography Awards, among others. He is a multiple time recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and a recent participating artist in the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s It’s the People public art installation.\nHis first monograph, Serpent in the Wilderness, a photographic exploration of yoga, was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2018. Work from the series was included in Love Devotion Surrender Dedication at Rick Wester Fine Art in New York and presented as a solo exhibition at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin, in 2022.\nAndy is currently an MFA Candidate at the Hartford Art School.\nJovan C. Speller is a multidisciplinary artist based in Minnesota. Her work uses photography, installation, sound, text, and mixed media visual works to interpret historic narratives through contemporary discourse. Her research-based practice is centered around elevating, complicating and inventing stories that explore ancestry, identity, and spatial memory.\nSpeller holds a B.F.A. in Fine Art Photography from Columbia College Chicago. Her photographic works and installations have been published and exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions. Her work has been collected in private collections, and at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. She is a recipient of multiple grants and fellowships including the McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship, Jerome Emerging Artist Fellowship, and Minnesota State Arts Board grants. Speller was awarded the 2021 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Minnesota Art Prize.\nAbout the Venue\nAnderson Center Galleries are free to the public and open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gallery One is on the lower level of the main building and is fully wheelchair accessible via an elevator.
