Workshop: Embroidery Basics – Adorning or Visible Mending with Wendy Placko

Join artist Wendy Placko for a free embroidery workshop on Saturday, July 15 from 2-4:30 p.m. in the Untitled Gallery happening in conjunction with Cecilia Cornejo’s Threads of Connection and Belonging exhibition.

Embroidery Basics: Adorning or Visible Mending” will offer step-by-step guidance using different embroidery stitches (stem, chain, blanket, satin, feather). See where your stitches can take you as a beginner or advance your embroidery skills on a cotton dish towel.  Bring a favorite clothing item to mend or enhance with stitchery. There is no cost, but advance registration is required. All skill levels are welcome; materials provided.

Wendy Placko is an interdisciplinary artist living in Northfield, Minnesota, where she collaborates with local artists to tell stories within a rural context. She developed her sewing and embroidery skills as a child through following cross-stitching and embroidery patterns, designing and sewing miniature costumes and dollhouse furnishings, and trying her hand at felt applique on pillows in home economics class. These dormant skills were awakened by taking part in Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo’s community embroidery project.

Cecilia Cornejo is a fiscal year 2023 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
