Seitu Jones ‘Stand in the Shadows’ Reception

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER. It is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

We are thrilled to celebrate the ‘Stand in the Shadows’ project alongside Seitu Ken Jones and everyone who contributed to this significant public art initiative.

The project emerged from Jones’ Public Artist Residency at the Anderson Center in May 2022. It honors and commemorates the historical African American presence in Red Wing with shadows engraved in the city sidewalks, paired with poetic verses and historical details. The two public artworks are located at the Salvation Army Family Store in Red Wing and at the Bush Street entrance to the historic St. James Hotel.

We invite you to a complimentary reception to recognize the project and unveil the latest site for ‘Stand in the Shadows’ at the Bush Street entrance of the St. James Hotel.

4:30-5:00 pm: Reception at the Salvation Army Family Store at 509 Plum Street

5:00-5:30 pm: Travel between the Salvation Army and St. James

5:30-6:00 pm: Reception at the St. James Hotel at 406 Main Street

This event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be provided. Read more about the artist, the project, and all of the people who helped make it happen.

This project has been made possible by support from Blandin Foundation, the Human Rights Commission of the City of Red Wing, and by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
