Gong Bathing Meditation with Heather Barringer inside NORTH installation

Join Zeitgeist percussionist Heather Barringer for a guided Gong Bathing Meditation, taking place within the NORTH installation at the Anderson Center’s brand-new untitled gallery, on Saturday, April 15 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. “Bathe” in the healing vibrations of sound while immersed in the beautiful imagery of Mary Ellen Childs’s multimedia NORTH installation. Leave feeling balanced and free of stress!

There is no cost to participate. Space is limited. Advance registration is highly encouraged, but not required. While cushions and chairs are a part of the NORTH installation, participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat, foldable chair, pillow, blanket or other item to get cozy and relax with.

The sound and vibrational energy of gongs is an ancient and powerful tool used to help still the mind and allow the body to deeply relax. The complex overtones of a gong wash over you, leading you into a state where healing can occur. An extremely personal experience, gong bathing meets participants at their own level of need and can leave them feeling energized, uplifted and mentally clearer. Coupled with the engrossing visuals of NORTH, participants will find a gong bath makes it easy to be present and lose track of time. While the session will last an hour, it’s certain that you won’t be watching the clock or feel the minutes ticking by.

Based on the stark winter environment of the Arctic, NORTH combines recorded music & sound, abstract paintings in winter hues, projected imagery of northern snowscapes, and sculptural elements to create an immersive environment in which to consider our northernmost lands and their connection to all of us wherever we live.

NORTH is inspired by Mary Ellen Childs’s experience participating in the Arctic Circle Expedition, a residency project that places artists onboard an Arctic-bound scientific vessel. Departing from the international territory of Svalbard, 10 degrees from the North Pole, Childs lived aboard a Tall Ship, sailing and making landfall daily to experience the terrain and collect recordings and imagery.

Percussionist Heather Barringer joined Zeitgeist in 1990. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls with a bachelor’s in Music Education in 1987 and studied at the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory, studying with Allen Otte from 1988-90.  In addition to performing and recording with Zeitgeist, she is a member of Mary Ellen Childs’ ensemble, Crash, and has worked with many Twin Cities organizations, including Nautilus Music-Theater, Ten Thousand Things Theater, Minnesota Dance Theater, and Aby Wolf.

NORTH was commissioned by Zeitgeist with funding from the MAP Fund, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the many donors to the Zeitgeist Commissioning Club as part of Zeitgeist’s DECADE FIVE project celebrating the ensemble’s 50 years.
