Hedin & Hasse Poetry Reading

Join us in the Tower View Barn for an evening of poetry and conversation! Poets Robert Hedin and Margaret Hasse will be sharing works from their newest publications with the community. This event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be provided. Plan to join us Thursday, August 20 at 7 p.m.

About the Artists

MARGARET HASSE

Margaret Hasse’s lifelong engagement in poetry began in South Dakota when her mother read poetry aloud and encouraged her young daughter to write. As a student at Stanford University, Margaret began publishing poems. After she returned to the Midwest and made the Twin Cities her home, Margaret benefited from and contributed to what has been called a renaissance of literary life in Minnesota. Margaret has taught for COMPAS Poets-in-the-Schools, Arts and Corrections, the Loft Literary Center, Augsburg College, and volunteered for organizations such as the Loft, Givens Foundation for African American Literature, and Rain Taxi.

Margaret has published nine books of poetry, including her latest, “Belongings: New and Selected Poems.” She has also co-edited a poetry anthology called “Rocked by the Waters: Poems of Motherhood.” Her work has received fellowships from the Jerome and McKnight Foundations, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as awards from the Midwest Independent Book Association. Her work has been featured on The Writer’s Almanac, Wordplay, and Verse Daily, and in American Life in Poetry, as well as many print and online journals and anthologies. She lives in St. Paul.

ROBERT HEDIN

Born and raised in Red Wing, Minnesota, Robert Hedin is the author, translator, and editor of more than two dozen books of poetry.  His many honors and awards include three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, fellowships from the Bush, McKnight, and Yaddo Foundations, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the North Carolina Arts Council.  Other honors include two Minnesota Book Awards, two Poetry in Public Places Awards, and the Kay Sexton Award for his longstanding contributions to the literary community of Minnesota.

Hedin has taught at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska, the Anchorage and Fairbanks campuses of the University of Alaska, St. Olaf College, and Wake Forest University, where he was Poet-in-Residence from 1980-1992. In 2001-2002 he served as the Edelstein-Keller Writer of Distinction at the University of Minnesota. He is co-founder and former director of the Anderson Center at Tower View, and from 1997-2015 was editor of the award-winning literary journal, Great River Review. His work has been featured on The Writer’s Almanac, National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, and in the nationally syndicated column, American Life in Poetry. He lives in Frontenac, Minnesota.

Venue and Accessibility Information

The Tower View Barn event space is accessed via an ADA compliant, interior ramp. There are handicap parking spaces available. While there is ample parking on the Anderson Center grounds, immediately adjacent parking is limited. If you do not need accessible parking, consider parking in the Anderson Center West Lot near the sculpture garden and enjoying the stroll through the Tower View site.

Seating is padded, armless chairs that are able to be moved to different configurations. Attendees in wheelchairs may request to have a staff member move any chair and sit in any location.

ASL interpretation is available upon request at least two weeks before the event.
