Borey Shin’s work explores experimental sound, composition, improvisation, and moving image through questions of identity and social context. Shin focuses on the paradoxes shaping Asian American engagement with Western art traditions, including visibility and erasure and inclusion and exclusion. These tensions inform an interdisciplinary practice that draws on traditional song and tonal harmony alongside field recordings, toy instruments, damaged media, and computer generated sound. Through improvisation and iterative experimentation, he explores the emotional terrain of cultural in betweens, using sound and performance to hold contradiction, memory, and collective experience.
