Composition
An autodidact composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and performing artist, 25-year-old Camilla Sims embodies the characteristics of the African freshwater cichlid that inspired her artist alias, Convict Julie. Pairing original music with original film productions, her vision manifests as visual albums. Currently transitioning into film scoring and classical music, Sims is carving a new lane for modern global Afrocentric Neoclassical music, deconstructing Eurocentrism from Classical music and uncovering ethnically diverse classical perspectives. Her work is similar to dual-moniker artists Dev Hynes and composer-artist Yussef Dayes, but the point of contrast is her anti-academic approach to create Afrocentric Classical music.
During her residency, Sims gave a free concert of her work at The Hastings Arts Center.
