Ciara Alfaro identifies as a writer, romantic, and descendant of magicians from Lubbock, Texas. A spring graduate of the University of Minnesota’s Creative Writing MFA program, Ciara is participating in the Anderson residency as a UMN Gesell Writing Fellow. In her work, she pulls apart the threads of her family’s ghosts, their Mexican American lore, and her own dogged fantasies about romance, girlhood, violence, desire, and coming of age.

While at the Anderson Center, Ciara worked on her queer, Mestiza, Texas-based coming of age memoir, “Heartfortunes.” During her residency, Ciara connected with area youth for a creative non-fiction workshop aimed at helping them see the extraordinary in their own stories.
