Printmaking

Upper Marlboro, MD
August 2026, four weeks

Lawton’s artwork, primarily prints, artist’s books, and mixed media pieces is grounded in personal and cultural narrative; seeking to illuminate the connection between historical and contemporary issues, cultural traditions, and the stories of people impacted by them. She takes inspiration from family history, intergenerational learning experiences, mentors, and influential Black artists and leaders. In August 2025, Lawton exhibited woodcut portraits and recorded interviews of her art teachers alongside portraits of Black women artist-educators who inspire her. Her fascination with narrative forms of expression is one reason artist’s books and printmaking are her preferred mediums of creative expression.
