During the residency, Helen Frost worked on a young adult novel set in the mid 1800’s. The story follows the lives of two sisters who are separated during the highland clearances. One sister lives on an island in the Hebrides with her grandmother and the other lives in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with her mother and baby brother. The girls’ father, and two other children die on the crossing to Canada.
The book was published as The Braid in 2006 by Farrar, Strauss & Giroux.
