Public Artist Residency

Anton Vázquez is an indigenous Maya Tzotzil visual artist and muralist from Chenalhó, Chiapas, Mexico. Family legends and lore form the building blocks of Anton’s art, which is inspired by his family, community, ancient Maya cosmology & iconography, and the traditions of his people. Along with Aaron Johnson-Ortiz, Anton is participating in the Anderson Center’s Public Artist Residency program though a partnership with (Neo)Muralismos de México, a Minnesota-based nonprofit and member-organization of the Mexican Cultural Arts Alliance (MCAA).
At Anderson Center, Anton is working to improve and expand his technique and skillset in large-scale painting, while creating images that reflect his Maya Tzotzil culture and traditions. During the residency, Anton and Aaron Johnson-Ortiz are collaborating with Hispanic Outreach of Goodhue County to create a temporary mural and offer public community engagement programs where Anton and residents can create and learn together.
Anton was partnered with Aaron Johnson-Ortiz and (Neo)Muralismos after being selected by MCAA, National Museum of Mexican Arts, and Portales del Arte en Chiapas as one of eighteen Chiapas-based artists to travel to the United States in 2023 to uplift their culture and community. In addition to Red Wing, Anton will engage communities in the Twin Cities, Austin, and Duluth during his trip to Minnesota.
