Eve Jacobs-Carnahan’s narrative bird sculptures illustrate destabilizing weaknesses in American democracy. In storybook scenes, she illuminates factors undermining the electoral system, such as gerrymandering and excessive money in politics. Her recent series of birds breaking out of a cage reflects on the grip of authoritarianism and the challenge of freedom. Infused with the feminine and domestic associations of fiber art, the time-consuming process of constructing the work invites reflection, an essential antidote to the aggressive rush of disinformation assaulting our democracy. Her Knit Democracy Together project creatively engages communities through a combination of craftivism and civics education.

During her residency, Jacobs-Carnahan will develop elements of an immersive installation and is giving a talk at the Red Wing Women’s Network about her work in craftivism and how we can all be craftivists.
