Lauren Fox

Lauren Fox spent her residency working on a book, A Thousand Greetings and Kisses. In this memoir/collection of short essays and vignettes, she traces the legacies of the Holocaust through the lens of her own experience as the daughter and granddaughter of Jews who left Germany in 1938. Through a series of connected short pieces, Fox attempted to uncover the buried traces of this history which are present, which in fact, have dominated her everyday life. She also has several letters which her great-grandmother wrote from Germany during the years that she and Fox’s great-grandfather were trying to flee, from 1938 through 1941. By interweaving these letters — immediate and unmediated — with her own, very mediated experiences, memories and ideas, Fox attempted to construct a narrative both personal and historical; intimate and, she hopes, relevant.  The book was published with the title, Send for Me, by Knopf in 2021 and was a New York Times bestseller and a New York Times Best Historical Novel of the Year.

Other novels she has written are Days of Awe, Still Life with Husband, and Friends Like Us. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Marie Claire, Parenting, Psychology Today, Rumpus, and Salon.
