Sally Franson spent the residency working on the third draft of the novel, What We Did Will Be Remembered. The section of that the novel that she worked on during the residency comes after a long jump in time within the manuscript, from the 1960s to the 1990s. Her purpose of this narrative leap is to convey the implications of inherited grief within several generations of the same family, particularly as the effects of the past, once hidden, rise up and swallow the characters whole. Hanson’s two published novels are A Lady’s Guide to Selling Out, 2018, The Dial Press, and Big in Sweden, 2024, Mariner Books. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, the Guardian, The Best American Travel Writing, and NPR.
