Sheila Benedis is a mid-career sculptor / book installation artist. A recent installation from an installation of artist books, document a large hanging installation surrounded by small artist books. The artist books are finished sculptures, but they are also models for the development of installation pieces. Hanging Scroll is an eighteen foot continuous, unfurling paper form, printed and stenciled on both sides, suspended and illuminated from within.
During her Anderson Center residency, she worked on an installation piece using the artist book format. It was based on the idea of an underwater environment, made up of sea creatures. Her work explores the interrelationships between anthropomorphic forms and the environment.
