Darrel Alejandro Holnes is a Panamanian-American poet, playwright, and NEA Fellow whose work explores the intersections of faith, empire, and survival in the Caribbean diaspora. His poetry collections Stepmotherland and Migrant Psalms have received the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize and the International Latino Book Award. His work draws on Hispanitude—a framework for understanding Afro-Latinx identity as the layering of Spanish colonial inheritance, African retentions, and U.S. empire. Holnes has held residencies at MacDowell, Cave Canem, and Bread Loaf, and serves as Executive Director of the Caribbean Research Center at CUNY.
